Elif Şafak'ın yüzyıl başında yayımlanan kitabı Mahrem postmodern romana iyi bir örnektir, barındırdığı öğelerle çok katmanlı bir yapıya sahip olan romanın en önemli özelliği ise
gerçeğin ve gerçeküstünün iç içe geçtiği yapısıdır. Yazar bu iç içe geçmeyi ustaca kullanır ve okuru şaşırtıcı bir son ile anlatıyı sonlandırır. Gerçekliğin bol miktarda gerçeküstü öğelerle iç içe kullanılmasının gayesi olay örgüsünün sonunda okurda zuhur edecek şok etkisinin kuvvetlendirilmesidir.

The marketplace was central both to the medieval towns as well as the fictional stories. Its centrality was due not only to its being an economic hub, but also to its role as a space of numerous social encounters. The stories set in the marketplace provide a fruitful venue to discuss the representation of the marketplace as well as encounters within—especially through the adventures of tricksters. Such a focus provides an intriguing glimpse on social anxieties and gendered performances in a "public" setting while encouraging the readers to think about the gendered perceptions and public and private "dichotomy" in the Early Modern Islamicate world. In this paper/chapter, after introducing the marketplace as a literary setting, I discuss the visibility of class and gender, the "wiles" of men (in contrast to the "wiles of women"), and the ways in which gender is performed in "public" for different audiences. Note: This chapter is a part of my dissertation project, titled The Story Has It: Prose, Gender, and Space in the Early Modern Ottoman World. In my dissertation, I use fictional Ottoman prose stories as primary sources and question prevailing assumptions about early modern Ottoman men and women and their use of space.

Bu ders, Eski Türk edebiyatının 19. yy. öncesi mensûr hikâye geleneğini hikâyelerin yakın okuması ile farklı tematik çerçevelerden incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Derste mensûr hikâyeler ile ilgili genel bilgi veren metinlerin tartışılmasının ardından, ikincil kaynaklar ışığında okurlar ve okuma pratikleri üzerine düşüneceğiz. Ayrıca farklı dönem ve üsluplardan seçilmiş hikâyelerin yakın okuması ile çeşitli temaları tartışacağız.

Tematik okumalar sırasıyla kadınlar, erkekler, mahremiyet ve ‘öteki’lere odaklanacak. Bu ders, edebiyatta toplumsal cinsiyet, mahremiyet ve ötekilerin temsilini düşünürken tarihyazımındaki kabullere de yeniden bakmamızı sağlayacak.

“Yolarlar sonra saçınla sakalın”: Antik bir hikâyenin Osmanlı serüveni, bilinen en eski örnekleri Antik çağlara tarihlenen, farklı dil ve kültürlerde birçok versiyonu olan bir hikâyenin, Osmanlıca versiyonları ve kendisine nesir hikâye geleneğinde bir yer edinmesini konu almaktadır.

Using Early Modern Ottoman fictional prose stories, this talk centers on stories set in the home and proposes to rethink home as a gendered space by looking at women’s (and men’s) performances there. The question of “Where to hide one’s lover?” introduces women’s strategies to claim home as their own space —mainly by its regulation and organization— and men’s “out-of-place”-ness in the domestic setting, especially during the daytime. The stories give us clues about the conceptions of home and its uses, about its boundaries and how these boundaries are negotiated and challenged by different actors. They also show us the anxieties born out of negotiations and transgressions of the locked doors by others, including lovers.

The fictional stories featuring neighborhoods reflect both the normative and practical facets of living in a close-knit community and the necessity to conform to its norms. Early Modern Ottoman fiction does not represent the neighborhood as the imagined place of social support modern nostalgia makes it out to be but more one of social control—yet one cannot deny the strong bonds among the members of the neighborhood community and the moral values attributed to the neighborhood. The people of the neighborhood, ehl-i maḥalle, appear in stories as a character with a single voice.
If one focuses on the functioning of the ehl-i maḥalle (or vice versa) supplemented by other prominent characters the imam, the ṣubaşı and the qadi—the neighborhood is primarily a male space created through the public performances of these men. However, when the question is the neighborhood morals and the flow of information/gossip, women are fundamental members of the neighborhood community—their conduct of life and visibility reflect not only on their husbands and fathers, but also on their neighborhood.
In this talk, I will discuss different facets of gossip in a neighborhood as represented in fiction: Scenes staged for the ears of the nosy neighbors (and its circumstances), falling in love with neighbors (and its consequences), the circulation of gossip (and different morals extracted from it), and the things the fear of exposure may lead to (in this case, the murder of dozens of people).

ÖZET Bu çalışma, Ateşten Gömlek romanını sentimental romanın özellikleri çerçevesinde ele almakta ve bu metnin bir askerleştirme metni olduğunu iddia etmektedir. Romanın ana karakterlerinden Peyami'nin üzerinden bu askerleştirme sürecinin nasıl işlediği tüm açıklığıyla görülmektedir. Ayrıca bu çalışmada, kadın ve toprak arasındaki ilişkiye değinilerek kadın ve vatan arasında kurulan paralelliğin askerleştirme metnine katkıları üzerinde durulmaktadır. Romanda, romanın ana karakteri Ayşe üzerinden vatan-kadın özdeşliği inşa edilmekte, savaşa adanmışlık ve gözü kapalı savaşa gitme bu özdeşlikle bağlantılı ele alınmıştır. Bu çalışmada ise, bu kadın-vatan özdeşliği psikanalizin yardımıyla saptanmaya çalışılmaktadır. Bunun yanında, mitlerle bu savaş metni arasındaki ilişki tespit edilmeye çalışılmakta ve anlatıcının üzerine odaklanan okurun metnin içine nasıl çekildiğine dair stratejiler görünür kılınmaktadır. Okuyucunun hangi stratejilerle metne çekildiği önemlidir. Çünkü savaşmak için bir milleti harekete geçirmek söz konusudur. Bu bağlamda, Ateşten Gömlek'in insanları harkete geçirici bir metin olarak konumlandığını söylemek mümkündür. Bu harkete geçiriş romanın anlatıcısı Peyami'nin etrafında toplanan okur kitlesi vesilesiyle mümkün olmaktadır. Bu çalışma boyunca, aslında millliyetçiliği kuran vatan ve askerleştirme kavramları olabildiğince etraflı bir biçimde ele alınmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu kavramların milliyetçi düşünceyi oluşturma biçimleri ve stratejileri çalışma içinde görünür kılınmaya çalışılmıştır. Kolektif bir kimlik olan milli kimliğin arka planında hangi dinamiklerin olduğu bir savaş metni olan Ateşten Gömlek üzerinden anlamlandırılmaya çalışılmıştır.
